"I turned out the light, I laid back in the bed and thought, ‘What happens now? Is there another switch to turn off? How do I get to sleep without alcohol?’”
That powerful moment is shared in the first episode of Vision Project, a four-part series created to mark Developing Health & Independence’s 20th anniversary. Originally broadcast on Somer Valley FM, the series—produced by Dom Chambers—is now available to stream and download in full.
The podcast offers deeply personal insights into the realities of addiction, homelessness, and recovery. Episode one follows John’s story, tracing his journey through childhood trauma, addiction, and prison, before finding the support he needed to rebuild his life. Later episodes explore the vital role of connection, stability, and support networks in overcoming social exclusion, as well as the work DHI does with young people and its vision for the future.
Reflecting on the series, DHI’s founder and Chief Executive, Rosie Phillips, said:
"Through these podcasts, we hope to reduce stigma, encourage more people to seek support, and show that with the right help, people can turn their lives around."
The Vision Project, which includes this podcast series alongside articles and events, isn’t just about looking back—it’s about shaping the future of social inclusion.
