It is estimated that for every person struggling with drug and alcohol misuse, there are at least five others who are affected. Many people dealing with a loved one who uses substances feel isolated and unsupported due to societal stigma around drug use. To address this, DHI’s Reach Out events seek to connect those with shared experiences of dealing with a family member battling drug or alcohol misuse, creating a sense of community, support, and shared lived experiences.
“We’ve heard stories from people who have lost loved ones. There are many others who have experience of losing people to addiction,” said Paul, former service user and now DHI Peer. “Identifying with others who have had these negative experiences – something positive might come of it. How to navigate that experience is so important.”
The events provide a safe and inclusive environment for all attendees to connect with others experiencing similar challenges. They offer inspiring stories of resilience and practical coping strategies, fostering a sense of community and support for those affected by a loved one's substance misuse.
